Shapes, sizes and layers
Badam ki Jali is not sold by flavour. It is sold by shape, size and finish: the same almond dough becomes a lattice round, a star, a coin or a betel leaf depending on the mould, and a jali is either a single layer or a two-layer warqi with silver leaf between. Filter below, or scroll through all of them. Store packs ship free within the USA; everything else is arranged by phone or email.
JaliJaliMedium warqi jali — 2.7 inch
The same double-layered warqi in the medium size — the one to pass around, box or set on a tray by the dozen. Made fresh after the order is received.

JaliLarge non-warqi jali — 4.5 inch
The single-layer classic: the scalloped round pierced through with a net of holes, each hole part of an ornamental pattern — the “jali” that named the whole family. Crisp, delicate, khasta.

Single layer, medium size — the everyday jali and the most-ordered piece. Forty of them make a generous box or the base layer of a tray.

Eight-pointed stars — the same star that patterns the stone jali screens of the Deccan — pierced through the middle. Made large as a showpiece or small for stars-and-crescent trays at Eid.

CoinsAshrafi — almond coin, 1.25 inch
Named after the gold coins of the old State of Hyderabad, and made in the same yellow. On both sides are engravings that describe what the coin is made of — a Persian couplet naming rose, musk, almond and sugar-candy. If the engraving is missing, it is not the original design.

Coins arranged with paan and jali on a wedding or Eid tray, or handed to guests as favours — a coin has always stood for prosperity. Combine with jali rounds and stars for a full tray.

The betel leaf, folded and tinted green and pinned with a clove like the real thing — an after-meal symbol turned into an after-meal sweet. Almond betel cookies by the pack, or on a tray with Ashrafi.

The lauz made not from almonds but from kaddu — opo squash — cooked down with sugar and ghee to a golden, grainy fudge. A Nawaiti household sweet that shares the tray with the almond kinds.

Anday ki peosi — a baked Nawaiti dessert of almonds, eggs, butter, milk, sugar and saffron, set like a rich custard-cake and topped with sliced almonds. Cut into squares and served after the meal, where a jali would be too delicate.

And what the old moulds made
In Hyderabad the same almond dough was pressed into roses, betel leaves, stars and diamonds, into hearts and half-moons, and — for special occasions — cut into Urdu lettering, a couple’s names or a blessing. Not all jalis are Nawait: the dessert has been copied and modified everywhere. Ours keeps to the family’s original designs and stamps, and we are glad to talk about a shape or an inscription you have in mind.
