JaliLarge warqi jali — 4.5 inch
The showpiece: two thin lattice layers with a leaf of edible silver varq pressed between them, so the silver glints through every hole. Two-layered almond cookie, 4.5 inches across.
Order in the storeBadam ki Jali is not sold by flavour. It is sold by shape, size and finish: the same almond dough becomes a lattice round, a star, a coin or a betel leaf depending on the mould, and a jali is either a single layer or a two-layer warqi with silver leaf between. Filter below, or scroll through all of them. Store packs ship free within the USA; everything else is arranged by phone or email.

JaliThe same double-layered warqi in the medium size — the one to pass around, box or set on a tray by the dozen. Made fresh after the order is received.

JaliThe single-layer classic: the scalloped round pierced through with a net of holes, each hole part of an ornamental pattern — the “jali” that named the whole family. Crisp, delicate, khasta.

JaliSingle layer, medium size — the everyday jali and the most-ordered piece. Forty of them make a generous box or the base layer of a tray.

JaliEight-pointed stars — the same star that patterns the stone jali screens of the Deccan — pierced through the middle. Made large as a showpiece or small for stars-and-crescent trays at Eid.

CoinsNamed after the gold coins of the old State of Hyderabad, and made in the same yellow. On both sides are engravings that describe what the coin is made of — a Persian couplet naming rose, musk, almond and sugar-candy. If the engraving is missing, it is not the original design.

CoinsCoins arranged with paan and jali on a wedding or Eid tray, or handed to guests as favours — a coin has always stood for prosperity. Combine with jali rounds and stars for a full tray.
Trays for occasions
ShapesThe betel leaf, folded and tinted green and pinned with a clove like the real thing — an after-meal symbol turned into an after-meal sweet. Almond betel cookies by the pack, or on a tray with Ashrafi.

ShapesBadam ke phal — fruit shapes made out of the almond dessert material, modelled and coloured by hand, leaves and all. The strawberry is the one we make most; other fruits on request.

ShapesPlayful pieces modelled from the same almond dough — ladybugs, little almond samosas, almond flowers — for birthdays, baby showers and children’s parties, or to finish a tray. An almond tablet can carry a name or a date for a naming day.

DessertsAlmond butter diamonds — richer and softer than the jali. Sold as almond diamonds by the pack: hab, badam or maske ke lauz, whichever you prefer.

DessertsThe lauz made not from almonds but from kaddu — opo squash — cooked down with sugar and ghee to a golden, grainy fudge. A Nawaiti household sweet that shares the tray with the almond kinds.

DessertsAnday ki peosi — a baked Nawaiti dessert of almonds, eggs, butter, milk, sugar and saffron, set like a rich custard-cake and topped with sliced almonds. Cut into squares and served after the meal, where a jali would be too delicate.

How a tray comes together
TraysStars and half-moons cut from the same dough and arranged together — the tray for Eid, or for any evening that wants a little moonlight on the table.
Order for Eid
TraysJali rounds and Ashrafi coins together, the classic pairing — packed to travel and arranged to be seen. We ship packed in layers; trays are best collected or arranged on the day.
Plan a trayIn Hyderabad the same almond dough was pressed into roses, betel leaves, stars and diamonds, into hearts and half-moons, and — for special occasions — cut into Urdu lettering, a couple’s names or a blessing. Not all jalis are Nawait: the dessert has been copied and modified everywhere. Ours keeps to the family’s original designs and stamps, and we are glad to talk about a shape or an inscription you have in mind.
